LOWELLVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) – Among the Veterans Day celebrations held at schools across the Valley on Tuesday, one is marking a new tradition for a district.
For the first time, Lowellville played host to a ceremony honoring local veterans on this holiday, and it’s something that was spearheaded by the students themselves.
The school has always recognized service men and women on Memorial Day, but the students wanted to do something special on Veterans Day too. In front of a packed audience, the students honored more than 40 Lowelville veterans.
Junior Maddie Vanover was part of the committee in charge of organizing the celebration, and she said the support and attendance exceeded her expectations.
“I didn’t even think that it would become something this big,” Vanover said. “I thought it would just be a small assembly for the school maybe to look back on what the veterans have done for us and it really took off into something amazing.”
Vanover said this is just their way of saying thank you to the folks that have already done so much for our country,
She also said the students are already planning to host a bigger Veterans Day celebration next year
