Boardman students talk turkey with park official

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Some students in Boardman are learning about the wild animals they can find right in their own backyards.

Monday’s lesson was on the wild turkey, just in time for Thanksgiving. The guest speaker was Karen McCallum, the recreation director at Boardman Park.

She shared the history of the wild turkey with the kindergarten class at Stadium Drive Elementary School and even brought along one that has been preserved for them to touch.

“Right here in Boardman, there are turkeys that are in the woods, that live in the area. So it’s a great opportunity to talk about animals that kids might have an opportunity to actually see,” McCallum said.

McCallum visits the school three times a year. In October, she shared a lesson about bats and she will talk to the students about the white-tailed deer in December.
