Giving Tuesday gaining momentum for charities

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A local foundation is encouraging Valley residents to put the shopping aside for a day and donate or give back to the charity of their choice.

It is part of a national movement that started two years ago in New York City called Giving Tuesday. The day falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and a weekend filled with folks trying to snag the best holiday shopping deals.

The goal is to get people to think about their community and donate in any way they can, whether it’s money, volunteering time, or giving blood to the Red Cross.

“We are in a season now that consumerism and hitting the sales and getting the best deals are a lot of what we think about, and it is the best just a time to reflect back on our community and giving back to our community in whatever way you can,” said Shari Harrell, president of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley.

People participating in Tuesday’s movement are encouraged to celebrate on social media by using #givingtuesday.
