Mahoning jail inmate charged with ethnic intimidation

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Authorities charged a Youngstown man with ethnic intimidation, assault on a peace officer and felonious assault after police said he attacked a jail nurse Friday.

According to a police report obtained by WKBN, Deron Williams was in the microwave area of the pod when he attacked Nurse Joyce O’Hara, punching her in the face. Several officers took Williams down.

After being detained, Williams mentioned that other inmates were supposed to be helping him in his attack. O’Hara suffered a split ear from her earring being ripped out and a laceration on her left upper lip.

Police said they found that Williams had made several statements about a grand jury not indicting Officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri in the August shooting of Michael Brown, including saying that something needed to be done to take revenge.

Police believe Wilson was acting independently and that he had not actually planned something with other inmates.
