YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — People seeking a fast-track to higher education were checking out Eastern Gateway Community College Saturday. The school says enrollment is up and they hope to get even more students registered and on their way to a brighter future.
Adam Wineland is taking placement tests. He first visited Eastern Gateway a few months ago
“I never followed through, and I kept seeing stuff on TV and decided this is something I want to do,” said Wineland.
Wineland plans to study nursing. He took advantage of the Fast-Track Enrollment program, becoming an EGCC student all in one day.
“We will need a high school transcript and they’re also able to take the placement tests today. If they are ready to register, they can meet with an advisor and schedule their classes,” said Mallory Demaiolo, recruitment coordinator. “Definitely you want to make sure you take the English and the Math.”
Advisor Stacey Spearman helps both new and returning students like Hilary Sun pick classes.
“I was helping her look at the curriculum at the University of Cincinnati for fashion design,” Spearman said.
Sun wants to transfer to Cincinnati, but English isn’t her native language. She moved here from China and is taking classes at EGCC to help.
“I still can transfer my credits to there so I don’t have to waste my time. I didn’t waste my time. So this is really good,” said Sun.
The school’s goal for students like Sun and Wineland, prepare them for 4-year degree programs.
“We have them apply here, register for classes here, and we try and tailor the program they are interested in to what we have here,” said Spearman.
If anyone interested didn’t get a chance to make it down to the school Saturday, there are two more fast track enrollment days scheduled. One on Dec. 13 and another one on Jan. 10.
