AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A special dog with a special ability has arrived in the Mahoning Valley.
Rigby moved into his new home with the Gumble family on Sunday. He is a Diabetic Alert Dog, meaning he has been trained to alert his owner if their blood sugar is too high or low.
The training doesn’t come cheap, so a fundraiser was held on Sunday in Austintown to help repay the $7,500 it cost to train and fly Rigby here.
“We worry a lot and that was one of the main reasons that we wanted to get him an alert dog so that he wouldn’t have to fall into a coma because he didn’t wake up because his blood sugar was too low or too high,” said Rigby’s new owner, Joyce Gumble.
Rigby, a silver Lab, was trained by Diabetic Alert Dogs of America in Las Vegas.
The Las Vegas-based group trains dogs to alert their diabetic owners if their blood sugar is too high or low.
