Local fans bask in OSU win, bars have good night

OSU fans in Austintown, Ohio celebrate after the OSU win over the Oregon Ducks.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Ohio State University’s football team meant business in Monday’s National College Football Play-off Championship Game.

For Mahoning Valley’s smaller bars and restaurants that means more business for them.

The sounds of O’Donald’s bar patrons screaming “O-H-I-O” could be heard clear to the parking lot of the Austintown bar when they saw The Ohio State Buckeyes Win their first National Championship since 2002.

“They haven’t won since I was 12-years-old,” said Austintown OSU Fan Frank Pezzano. “It’s the best thing to happen to this state in long time.”

“The witness of a national championship is unbelievable,” said O’Donald’s patron Brian Sherba.

Fans like Youngstown State University student Alexis Pyle said they did everything they could to make sure they didn’t miss the end of the game.

“I started watching at the hospital, and I finished watching it here,” said Pyle. “Every glimpse I could get it was always on the edge.”

O’Donald’s Manager Jay Waldeck said busy nights like Monday’s game are very important for the tavern.

“We get all those people that come out, and those that don’t normally come out we can create regulars out of those guys,” said Waldeck. “And, hopefully we’ll see those guys again.”

One O’Donald’s bartender said she noticed more customers they didn’t recognize.
