Firefighters in Poland Twp. conduct unusual rescue

Two birds were rescued by firefighters in Poland Township, Ohio.

POLAND TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKBN) – Firefighters with the Western Reserve Joint Fire District conducted an interesting rescue Wednesday.

A couple driving along New Castle Road in Poland Township spotted two parrots in a tree. When they couldn’t coax the birds down, they called the fire department for help.

Firefighter Dave Thornton said that he and firefighters Bob Sanchez and Tony Tucci were able to coax the birds close to them and brought them down from the tree.

“I had on real heavy fire gloves and one of the birds started biting my glove, and I was able to move my hand along the branch and the bird followed,” Thornton said. “When he got close enough, I grabbed him. They are big birds.”

Thornton said it was hard to tell how long the birds were in the tree but they were very cold. A cage was also found by the tree.

Poland Township police turned the birds over to the couple who said they would care for them.
