Man pleads guilty in girlfriend’s drug-related death

BUTLER, Pa. (AP) – A western Pennsylvania man has pleaded guilty to having provided fentanyl-laced heroin that authorities say led to his girlfriend’s fatal overdose last year.

Thirty-one-year-old Shayne Emery of Slippery Rock pleaded guilty last week in Butler County Court to drug delivery resulting in death.

The Butler Eagle reports that prosecutors plan to recommend a sentence of four to 15 years when he is sentenced Feb. 24.

Police say 21-year-old Brittany Lee Hays was found unresponsive in February with a syringe and stamp bags marked “Theraflu.” Officials said that was one of the street names used for heroin laced with the powerful synthetic painkiller fentanyl that was blamed for more than 20 fatal overdoses in western Pennsylvania last year.
