fatal accident in Austintown kills two

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Ohio State Highway Patrol identified the two people killed in a two-vehicle accident in Austintown Thursday morning as Irven Wilhelm, 78, and Evelyn Wilhelm, 76, of Deerfield, Ohio.

According to Sgt. Bret Henderson of OSP, the two were traveling east in a 2003 Chevrolet S-10 pickup track on Mahoning Avenue at about 11 a.m. when the driver lost control, went left of center and hit a moving truck traveling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the moving truck “saw them coming over and tried to brake, but he couldn’t,” said Sgt. Henderson. “I guess there was a little ice on the road, but I don’t know if that’s what caused the pickup truck to come all the way over.”

Mahoning Co. Coroner Dr. Joseph Ohr said that the impact immediately killed Irven and Evelyn Wilhelm, who were both wearing seat belts. The driver of the Penske truck, Larry L. Lawrence of Greenville, Pa., was not injured.

“We can’t figure out what caused them to go left of center,” Sgt. Henderson said, adding the crash is still under OSP investigation.

Mahoning Avenue between Lipke and Turner roads was closed early Thursday afternoon as crews worked to clear the scene.

Ohr stated that there was no initial evidence of alcohol being a factor in the crash.
