Freezing rain a concern for Thursday

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Storm Team 27 is on alert for the potential for freezing rain and road crews are anticipating the need to pre-treat roads and highways.

The concern Thursday is a drastic change in temperature that is forecast throughout the day. That coupled with rain that is moving in is causing road crews to keep their eye on the sky and determine what mix and how much they are going to use on the roads.

The rain is anticipated to begin mid-morning and continue through the day. Temperatures are expected to warm mid-day and stay above freezing through most of the day. The concern is that transitional period between when the rain begins and the temperatures are still below freezing. At that time, roads could become icy and dangerous.

As of 11 a.m. Thursday several reports of icy roads and accidents were coming into the WKBN 27 First News newsroom. An accident on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown has stopped traffic between Lipke Road and Turner Road.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for the viewing area calling for a wintry mix through Friday.

Fred McMullen, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh says they issue freezing rain advisories for freezing drizzle. And because of the recent uptick in ice events this year, we are already at twice our average. The usual amount we have is five.

Motorists should allow extra time to get to their destinations and expect changing weather conditions.
