Pa. 8th-graders get erotic novel crossword

50 shades of grey crossword puzzle given to middle school students

MONESSEN, Pa. (WKBN) – A Pennsylvania middle school is trying to explain how a group of kids ended up with a word search based on an erotic novel.

James Carter’s 13-year-old son brought the unedited version of the crossword puzzle home from Monessen Middle School Tuesday.

The puzzle is based on the novel 50 Shades of Grey. It was handed out in class, to at least five students in the 8th grade.

“I asked my son who passed it out, he said that the teacher passed it out,” Carter said.

Carter said no one at the school would explain to him how it happened.

“We just learned of this issue, just yesterday. And an investigation will occur,” School Board Solicitor John Toohey said.

School board members refused to say which staff members were involved in passing out the puzzles, calling it a personnel matter.

“It was a huge but unintentional error and collected from the five students involved as soon as it was realized. Unfortunately, one copy was taken by a student, who then posted it on social media,” School Board Director Roberta Bergstedt said in an email.

School officials would not say whether any staff members involved in handing out the puzzle have been disciplined yet.
