Copper thieves hit Warren church

Copper units were stolen from Blessed Sacrament Church in Warren

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – The damage done by copper thieves last week to a church in Warren could cost up to $40,000 to repair.

Copper coils and other valuable metals from four air conditioning units on the roof of Blessed Sacrament Parish on Reeves Road were stolen. Church officials said they may not have known about the theft until this summer because the thieves turned the heating part of the unit off to cut the air conditioning pipes and never turned it back on when they finished. Parts of the building began to freeze.

“We were quoted yesterday that for the $1,000 to $1,500 worth of copper, it is going to cost us 10 to 20 times that to repair it,” church manager Dan Lazor said.

Lazor recommends everyone check their heating and cooling units on a regular basis. Copper thieves also recently hit other businesses in that area, including the Pizza Hut on East Market Street in Warren.
