STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) – A local candy shop is gearing up for the start of the spring holiday season and Valentine’s Day is the kickoff.
Giannios in Struthers has the shelves stocked with valentine specials. But pressures from overseas put the supply of chocolate in doubt for some candy makers as increased demand from China is putting a strain on the global supply of cocoa beans.
But owner John Giannios said he is not worried about a shortage.
“We deal with some big firms that bring the cocoa beans. They pretty much assured us that we are good to go for the next couple years, although I do see prices increasing,” Giannios said.
He said he is hoping for a good holiday season, but bad weather can keep shoppers away.
The bitter cold temperatures on Friday were not enough to keep Donna Cannon of Boardman away.
“I usually try to get about six of each,” Cannon said as she picked out a handful of this and a few of that at the Struthers store.
She has bought her candy at Giannios for 15 years.
“They do have good candy and they have better prices,” Cannon said.
This year, Giannios is sending his chocolates all over the world.
“We do a lot of work for the Home Shopping Network, and we sold over 5,000 of those six-pound tins and we got a couple hundred going out today last minute,” he said.
Some people at the store were buying for themselves. Others were buying for loved ones.
Struthers 6th-grader Jarod Moody picked out pecan clusters for his mom.
“I like any kind of chocolate but dark chocolate. Some chocolates I’m not allowed to have because I have braces, but I am getting them off this summer,” he said.
Giannios already is looking ahead to filling Easter candy baskets.
“We have been making Easter candy for three weeks now. Because it is such a long holiday, it is a month-long holiday. It is even better than Christmas. Easter is the biggest part of our business,” he said.
