BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – The top dogs from around the world and here in the Valley are getting ready to head to New York City this weekend for the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, which begins Monday.
One dog from the Valley who will be making a return appearance at Westminster is a Skye Terrier named Byrne, or call him by his kennel name, “Grand Champion Jay-Roy Burnin’ Hot For You.” Byrne lives in Boardman and this will be his fourth time competing at the Super Bowl of dog shows.
He is considered one of the favorites to win his breed and this year, Byrne was a double-invitee to compete at Westminster. His owner and co-handler, Kelly Salandro, explains why.
“He qualified twice, won national specialty in October in Philadelphia, finished in top five in his breed last year, finished number three at Westminster,” Salandro, an executive producer for the WKBN First News morning newscast, said.
Byrne and the other terriers will compete Tuesday morning at the Piers in Manhattan. If Byrne wins best of breed, he will be on television Tuesday night, competing in the group ring. Salandro said showing at Westminster is a big deal.
“This is the Super Bowl of dog shows, so it is a really big deal to qualify and compete at this level, and this will be his fourth time competing there,” she said.
