YSU students hold fundraiser for Alabama trip

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — There’s only a week away from the Academy Awards, and the movie Selma remains one of the contenders for Best Picture.

In the midst of this, several Youngstown State students will be on their way to Alabama to see the real Selma.

They held a spaghetti fundraiser Sunday afternoon at Richard Brown United Methodist Church.

The money raised from dinner tickets and t-shirts will fun their “Sojourn To The Past.” It’s a trip that takes students to Atlanta, Little Rock and parts of Alabama that were significant to the Civil Rights Movement.

Those who have taken the journey in the past call it life-changing.

“Just meeting the Civil Rights leaders and activists, that was really special to me, because you get to meet a piece of history,” said Alicia Reed of Youngstown State University.

“People fought for us, and they did it non-violently, and so now we can just be examples of what non-violence is,” added Micah Smith of Youngstown State University.

The students will leave for this year’s sojourn at the end of March. The program has brought students from across the U.S. to the south since 1999.
