Wellsville players want input for new football coach

Wellsville players want input into who is hired as the new football coach

WELLSVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) – Wellsville High School is without a football coach after their most recent coach transferred to Southern Local, which is Wellsville’s arch-rival.

Players stood in front of the Wellsville Board of Education on Monday, asking that their new coach be one of their current assistant coaches because they are familiar with the team’s winning ways.

“We figured tonight that the players should actually have a say on who the coach will be,” Wellsville football player Vince Giordano said.

The high school junior stood in front of the board and a crowded room, expressing why he felt that way.

“We want Wellsville to be known as Wellsville football because we don’t want to have a bad coach who takes down the whole pride of being a Wellsville football player,” Giordano said.

The team’s most recent head coach, Rich Wright, left Wellsville to coach for arch-rival, Southern Local.

“We completely understand that is his decision. No hard feelings toward him at all,” player Eric Sullivan said.

Wright took Wellsville to back-to-back playoff trips for the first time in school history. Players said they want to keep the Tigers’ winning ways with the new coach.

“It is growing and it is going to keep growing,” Giordano said.

After speaking in front of board members, the players hit a roadblock Monday because of laws in place.

“It does not just arbitrarily happen. We have to advertise the position from within. So you know, there are some hoops we have to jump through,” Wellsville Board of Education member Ed Bauer said.

Until the position is posted, players and the community will have to wait to find out who the next coach will be.
