NEWTOWN, Conn. (WTNH) — The house where Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza started his deadly rampage will be torn down. The final decision was reached Tuesday night.

After a long process, it was a unanimous decision to tear down the house. Just six people attended the town meeting Tuesday. No one rushed to speak about the motion, but eventually three came up. All of them supported tearing down the home.

The house is where Adam Lanza murdered his mother in December of 2012 before going to Sandy Hook Elementary, where he killed 26 children and educators.

“Most of the people I talk to are in favor of getting rid of this place because it’s just bad memories,” said Newtown’s Philip Carroll. “The drive by it and it’s poison to them.”

The home at 36 Yoganada Street has been vacant and was gifted to the town from a bank. It’s on two acres of land and is assessed at at nearly $400,000. With the motion they’ll tear down the home and leave the land an open space. They’re moving forward to put language in the deed that the town cannot profit from it, and if they do sell it, money would be set aside for the victim’s families.

People in the community have another concern.

“I would like to see the consideration that none of the building materials end up on auction sites and things of that nature,” said Eric Paradis of Newtown.

“We know that there’s a marketplace for them, so we’ll ensure that nothing is left to travel in that channel,” said First Selectman Patricia Llodra.

Llodra says a local construction company volunteered their time to do the work and tear down the house. The earliest it could happen would be this spring.
