2 children killed in overnight fire

Two children were killed in a fire in Eaton, Ohio.

EATON, Ohio (AP) – Officials say a house fire in western Ohio has killed two children.

The Preble County sheriff’s office says the fire was reported along U.S. Route 35 between Eaton and West Alexandria at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

It wasn’t until after firefighters arrived that it was discovered that two children were unaccounted for. West Alexandria Fire Chief Jeff Schafer says the floor was already gone and the roof was beginning to collapse, so they couldn’t enter the house.

The blaze destroyed the home. Investigators later found the children’s remains in the basement. Sheriff Mike Simpson wouldn’t say how investigators learned about the missing children.

The children’s names and ages weren’t released. It was unclear whether any adults were present.

The fire is under the investigation. Autopsies will be performed.
