YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Youngstown Water department says that city residents should expect more water main breaks this because of cold weather.
Although the number of broken mains has been high this winter, the overall number is down in the area as compared to late February 2014.
A city water department spokesman said he understands how frustrating is is for people, when something breaks in their neighborhood.
“When it starts thawing, people think it’s going to get better, but what happens is when it starts thawing, the ground gets saturated,” Youngstown Water Department Construction Superintendent Joe Dunlap said. “The ground gets heavier, weighs it down. You have the movement, you have the shifting of the earth, and of course, find a weak spot in the main and it’ll break.”
Dunlap said he has crews out all during the day ready to repair water main breaks.
