Detroit ends season for YSU Men

DETROIT, Michigan (WKBN) – Four players scored in double figures but a late run by Detroit eliminated the Youngstown State men’s basketball team from the Horizon League Tournament after a 77-67 loss at Calihan Hall.

The Penguins finish the season with an 11-21 record and Detroit improves to 15-17 and advanced to play Cleveland State, Friday, March 6, at 9:30 p.m.
Junior Bobby Hain led the Penguins with 14 points and senior Shawn Amiker recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Marcus Keene posted 12 points and senior DJ Cole had 11 points and three assists.

Leading the Titans were led by Chris Jenkins with 21 points and Juwan Howard, Jr., with 20. Paris Bass added 11 points for the Titans.

The Penguins led for nearly 31 minutes and by as many as eight in the second, but the Titans used a 14-0 run in the last four minutes to pull out the victory. Detroit led the game for the last 3:21.

Amiker’s putback gave the Penguins a 65-63 lead at the 4:56 mark, but a jumper by Howard and two free throws by Jenkins with 3:21 left gave the Titans their first lead of the game, 67-65.

The Titans would score 10 more before a layup by Jalon Plummer with 20 seconds left.

Three times in the second half the Penguins led by eight points 46-38 after a 3-pointer by Keene with 15:58 to go, 52-44 on Keene’s jumper at the 13:08 mark and 54-46 on Amiker’s layup with 12:29 left.

In the first half, the Penguins, who led 36-31 at halftime, shot 50 percent (14-of-28) from the field and outrebounded the Titans, 18-15.
The Penguins jumped out to a 15-6 lead after a 3-pointer by Amiker before the Titans knotted the game at 19-19 with 9:29 to go on 3-pointers by Carlton Brundidge, Matthew Grant and Bass.

Over the next four minutes, the Penguins used a 10-2 run to boost their lead to 29-21 after a basket by Hain. The Penguins extended their lead to nine points, 33-24, after a layup by Larry Johnson at the 2:16 mark.
