Ex-Niles employee pleads to stealing city funds

NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – A former Niles city treasury employee pleaded guilty to stealing from the city Tuesday afternoon.

Phyllis Wilson, whom a grand jury indicted April 24 on a charge of theft in office, pleaded guilty during a hearing Tuesday and will be sentenced at a later date. Officials did not announce a date for her sentencing.

According to figures from an audit which Ohio Auditor Dave Yost performed on the city of Niles, nearly $143,000 went missing from the city’s treasury department dating back to 2008. Yost said Wilson was responsible for depositing cash utility payments in the city’s bank account, but instead pocketed the money in 57 instances.
