Email snafu prompts security scrutiny at sheriff’s office

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – An inappropriate email circulated around the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office has prompted a closer look at security.

Sheriff Thomas Altiere said an email with a video attachment claiming to be about gun safety was sent to the office recently. An employee forwarded the email to other deputies without opening it.

When another employee opened the email, they quickly saw that the video was of a sexual nature. Altiere said once the employee discovered what he had done, he took action.

“As soon as he found out about it, he redacted it all from the people who did not open it. But there was two or three people who did open it,” Altiere said.

The sheriff also said he has spoken with people in their information technology department about the incident, and they are taking steps to make sure it does not happen again.
