Lawyer for murder suspect wants statement thrown out

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The lawyer for a Youngstown man charged with aggravated murder asked that a statement the man made to police not be presented to potential jurors at a trial, according to a representative of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge Scott Krichbaum.

On Dec. 5, a grand jury indicted Larry McDonald, suspected of shooting and killing 29-year-old Abdullah Mahdi in a Reema’s Fashion store on the south side of Youngstown on Nov. 19.

A hearing will be held Wednesday with Judge Krichbaum and McDonald’s lawyer to determine if the statement should be suppressed–that is, not included in the trial.

On Nov. 19, a man walked into Reema’s Fashion in the Crim’s Corner plaza on South Avenue and said he was shopping for clothes. At some point, Mahdi, who was the owner of the store, and the robber exchanged gunfire.

The robber, later identified as McDonald, was shot several times and was tackled to the ground by a customer inside the store, police said. Mahdi was killed after being shot in the head.
