CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – A big event is being held this weekend at Boardman and Canfield high schools.
The two school districts are co-hosting the Ohio High School Speech League State Tournament. Approximately 900 students from 80 schools are taking part in the tournament. And for anyone who thinks speech and debate is all about standing behind a podium should think again.
The competitions range from team debate to individual humorous interpretation, where competitors focus on comedy. The students involved say it is good to have opportunities to learn and grow outside of sports.
“It is really good for me because I am not athletic. So I enjoy entertaining people. I enjoy speaking to people and giving them the opportunity to laugh,” Halee Martin, a senior at Columbiana High School, said.
“It has completely changed my life and my outlook on everything that I do. And it is an amazing thing to be a part of,” Briana Davis, a junior at Columbiana High School said.
The competition continues Saturday and wraps up with an awards ceremony at 8 p.m.
