Madison Ave. Expwy. to remain closed through weekend

Mudslide on Madison Avenue Expressway in Youngstown, Ohio.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – According to Youngstown City Deputy Director of Public Works Charles Shasho, the Madison Ave Expressway ramp will remain closed through the weekend after a mudslide caused damage in the area Thursday.

The engineering department will assess the Expressway Monday to determine if it can be opened.

Because of gushing water Thursday, dirt and huge blocks of concrete gave way right under the Oak Street Bridge that crosses the highway. The bridge is located right before making the turn to enter U.S. Route 422 and the Expressway on the city’s east side.

There was water gushing from a pipe under the bridge, which prompted a motorist to call 911.

The Youngstown Water Department believes water pipes burst in the old Immaculate Conception school and caused a sewer to flood. The water made its way by the bridge, forcing the land to shift.
