Ohio child, mother die after being pulled from icy pond

A mother and child were killed after their vehicle plunged into a frozen pond in Sidney, Ohio.

SIDNEY, Ohio (AP) – Authorities say a mother and her 3-year-old son have died after being pulled from an icy pond in western Ohio.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says two county workers saw the boy lying on the ice Thursday afternoon, called 911 and began CPR.

The woman was still in the water and unresponsive. Emergency crews were able to pull her from the water and begin CPR. She and the child were taken to a hospital in Sidney.

The sheriff’s office says the child apparently was trapped in the water and his mother went in to rescue him. She managed to pull her son onto the ice but apparently couldn’t pull herself out.

The woman was identified as 39-year-old Maurissa Bickford. The boy was her 3-year-old son, Noah.
