LEAVITTSBURG, Ohio (WKBN) – A house on Clemmens Court in Leavittsburg was destroyed Friday morning when a tree smashed into it.
“The tenant that lived next door gave me a call as soon as the crash happened. As soon as he called us, we got in a vehicle and came over,” property owner Mike Ockenfels said.
The Warren Township Fire Department said they believe the wet soil from the recent thaw as the reason the tree fell. The tenant was not home at the time.
A second tree also fell, but did not do any damage.
Ockenfels said it was a process to see what to save.
“There was really nothing we could do. Lives wires were down, so we couldn’t get near the house. We had to wait. It took us an hour for them to clear it so we could get in and get his dog,” Ockenfels said. “At first we thought something might have happened to it because it wouldn’t come. We found him under the bed. Very scared.”.
The dog was found safe in a cage. Although the house is destroyed, the resident will have another place to live soon: Right next door.
