This report is from our sister station WCMH, Columbus.

CARDINGTON, Ohio – An ice jam could be partly to blame for the collapse of a bridge into Mud Run outside of Cardington.

The Morrow County Engineer’s office says that the bridge on Township Road 152 in Morrow County was already closed when it collapsed Tuesday.

A picture sent to NBC4 by neighbor Sarah Hinton shows side of the one lane steel truss bridge with a wood deck dangling over Mud Run.

According to the Engineer’s office, the bridge was originally closed last fall when a truck that was crossing the bridge struck a corner support while trying to navigate a curve at the end of the bridge.

Engineers aren’t sure why the bridge collapsed. They say that an ice jam could have further damaged the support or it could have given way on its own. They don’t believe that the water level was high enough to collapse the bridge.

The bridge was originally built in 1913 and was already scheduled to be replaced though the Ohio Bridge Partnership.
