2015 Howland Baseball Preview
Head Coach: Sean Price
2014 Record: 15-9

The Tigers began 2014 with an 11-1 mark. However, down the stretch, Howland lost four games by two runs or less and finished the season with just four wins in their last twelve.

This year, Howland returns a quartet of senior pitchers. Stephen Hornak and A.J. Armstrong are back after compiling a solid junior campaign. Hornak appeared in 12 games as he struck out 16 and walked just 4 of his 160 batters he faced. Stephen registered a 2.26 earned run average and closed out the season with a 3-3 record. Armstrong tossed 26 2/3 innings while tallying a 2.89 ERA with a 3-1 record. Michael Gantz (15) and Nick Loychik (15.1) hurled 30 1/3 innings while Gantz recorded a 0.93 ERA and Loychik a 3.20.

The Tigers offense will have to recover from losing many of the bats which were able to accumulate a .330 average as a team. Senior Vinnie Ruberto batted .296 (21-71) while scoring 20 runs and knocking in 9 and finished with 5 doubles. Vinnie’s classmate Vernon Cesta had 8 hits in 18 at bats last year (.444) while juniors Craig Lewis (.381 BA, 6 RBIs) and Connor Antinone (.318 BA, 5 SBs) both were successful at the plate when they had their opportunities. Senior Ray Hill closed out the season with belting 13 hits in 56 at bats as he had 9 RBIs and 5 doubles.

Howland will be challenged from the start as they open the season against Fitch next Monday.
