Weathersfield traffic stop results in gunfire

One person was arrested after police opened fire on a van that crashed into a police cruiser in Weathersfield, Ohio and kept on going.

NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – A man accused of ramming his van into a Weathersfield police cruiser last night prompting gunfire from police was in court Tuesday morning.

Edward Kitt, 59, is facing felonious assault charges.

He was arraigned Tuesday morning in Niles Municipal Court.

Police said they were at a traffic stop on West Park Avenue last night around 9 p.m. when Kitt came down the road and smashed into the rear of a patrol car. Kitt continued towards an officer, barely missing him.

Police opened fire on the van and it stopped a short distance away.

Investigators said Kitt was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. He suffered minor injuries, while police officers were not hurt.

Weathersfield Police Chief Michael J. Naples said he was grateful the officers involved were not injured.

“With the information we have at this time, their actions appear to be an appropriate response to the threat to the officers’ lives and safety. We will continue to work with the Ohio State Highway Patrol in their investigation,” Naples said.

As standard protocol, the officers’ names are not being released and have been temporarily placed on administrative leave.
