YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Congressman Tim Ryan, D-Niles, said he is outraged that the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) would deport a Brazilian wanted for attempted murder, while Brazil continues to refuse the extradition of Claudia Hoerig.
Hoerig is wanted for the murder of her husband, Major Karl Hoerig, nearly eight years ago at their Newton Falls home. She fled to her native country of Brazil after the murder and the Brazilian government has refused to extradite her to stand trial.
“I am furious that the Department of Homeland Security would deport this Brazilian fugitive caught on U.S. soil while Claudia Hoerig is living freely in Brazil. We should stand firm and refuse to make any Brazilian deportation until they release Claudia Hoerig to the U.S. Marshals so she can finally stand trial for the murder of Major Karl Hoerig,” Ryan said in a news release.
Ryan promises to introduce legislation soon that he says will give the United States leverage to make Brazil send Claudia Hoerig back to Ohio to stand trial.
