Youngstown KFC shooting victim Joseph Kaluza dies. Original story from 2008. Youngstown, Ohio

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Life for Joe Kaluza changed just before 10 a.m. on March 24, 2008 during a robbery on Youngstown’s south side.

Taran Helms, 22, and his girlfriend, Hattie Gilbert, 20, were later convicted of ambushing and shooting Kaluza in the neck. Kaluza was on his way to make a bank deposit of $306 from the KFC he managed on South Ave.

Back in 2008, Kaluza’s sister, Anna Fitzgerald, described him as a fun loving, hard worker that everybody loved.

After the attack, the proud father of two children was left a paraplegic.
