Equal Pay Day marked in Youngstown

Equal Pay Day marked in Youngstown, Ohio

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Tuesday marked Equal Pay Day across the country.

The event marks how long women, on average, must work to catch up with what their male counterparts made in the previous year. The Youngstown Business and Professional Women’s Club along with the YWCA are working to increase awareness.

Statistics show that women on average earn 78 cents for every dollar a man in an equal position earns. It can be an even greater gap for women of color.

Organizers of Tuesday’s event said it affects women’s economic stability.

“But it also weighs on her professional development and her own confidence and her own just inner ability to feel that she can reach her full potential,” said Sarah Stafford of the Youngstown Business and Professional Women’s Club.

An event to raise awareness about Equal Pay Day will be held at the Magic Tree in Boardman from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.
