Friends, community gather to help family of Youngstown fire victim

A fundraiser was held in Struthers, Ohio for the family of a Youngstown, Ohio fire.

STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) –  Family, friends, and the community came together Saturday to help Corinne Gump’s family pay for funeral expenses.

Gump and her grandparents, Bill and Judy Schmidt were killed in a fire on Powers Way in March.

Hundreds of people went to the Bowery Tavern in Struthers to support the family.

The fundraiser included bounce houses, a 50/50 raffle, and live entertainment. There was also a ceremony honoring Youngstown’s firefighters.

Gump’s family said they’re overwhelmed with all the support they’ve received from the community.

“People we don’t even know are coming to us, and people we don’t even know are here. It means a lot to us. We thank everybody in the community – the schools, all of our friends and family. We just thank everybody,” said Lisa Chapatti, Gump’s stepmother.

Organizers hoped to raise several thousand dollars at the event.

“It was a terrible tragedy, and the community has pulled together and it has been such overwhelming support that we want to thank everybody, and we appreciate everything that everyone has done for us,” said Christine Semen, organizer.
