YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Three new firefighters were sworn in Thursday morning in Youngstown.
The new members are replacing retired firefighters and brings the department back up to 130. In December, the department was cut down from 138 after the city and the firefighter’s union agreed to help save the city money so they would not lose a truck.
Chief John O’Neill said summer is a good time to bring the new firefighters on board.
“It is good timing right before the summer cycle. Get them on board, get them on the trucks. Usually the fires are pretty steady, so I am sure they will get their experience real quick,” O’Neill said.
The new firefighters are Patrick McGlone, Samuel Congemi and Dwyain Montgomery.
O’Neill said the staff at the fire department is still thin even at 130.
