Mathews wins District Championship thriller

Mathews Mustangs Division IV District Champions

CORTLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – Mathews plated two runs in the top of the seventh, and survived a bases-loaded threat in the bottom of the inning to edge top-seeded Windham 3-2 Thursday evening in the Division IV District Finals at Candlelight Knolls in Warren.

With the bases full in the bottom of the seventh, Mustangs’ Pitcher Cheyenne Eggens recorded a strikeout, and Catcher Jenna Siefert promptly fired a perfect strike to Third-Baseman Maddie Williams who tagged out the Bombers’ baserunner to end the game.

Siefert also drove in the go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh.

Eggens struck out 12 batters to earn the complete game victory.  She allowed two runs for the Mustangs.  Eggens also 1-3 with an RBI at the plate.  Meredith Grimes also had a pair of hits for the Mustangs.

Mathews improves to 23-5 on the season.  The Mustangs advance to face Western Reserve in the Division IV Regional Semifinals Thursday at 5PM at Kent State University.
