Veteran wants to see Campbell flag replaced

Missing flag in Campbell, Ohio

CAMPBELL, Ohio (WKBN) – Memorial Day weekend is a time to remember those who gave all for our liberties.

And for many Americans, the flag is an icon of freedom and many people fly it proudly, especially on Memorial Day.

Tim Kauffman drives by Crim’s Corners Plaza in Campbell on his way to work and sees a sign that reads “Soliders died so these flags might fly. Let freedom ring.” on a regular basis. As a veteran, it’s concerning to him that the flagpole next to the sign is without a flag.

And it has been for months. Last Memorial Day, he felt so strongly about it that he took matters into his own hands.

“I tried to replace the flag but there was no rope so I took several trips to replace it. I had to take the flagpole down myself and re-route the rope and fly the flag,” Kauffman said.

His flag flew for a few months and then it disappeared. It has been months since Kauffman’s flag was removed from the pole. As Memorial Day approaches, he wants to know when he can expect to see another flag in its place.

The Gary Crim Corp. owns the property where the flagpole sits. Raymond Wright manages the properties for the late Gary Crim and said he was a close friend.

“Mr. Crim was very patriotic. He served in the Army and his pride and joy was his country. He has flags flying on all of his plazas,” Wright said.

According to Wright, this particular flag is missing because of a broken rope that needs to be fixed before another flag can fly. But Kauffman may beat him to the punch.

“If it is not here, I will put up another flag,” Kauffman said. “I know that there are people that sacrificed the ultimate sacrifice for the flag to fly and the sign says it all and it’s just not here.”

According to the Gary Crim Corp., they plan on putting up another flag after the holidays.
