Woman sentenced to at least 5 years in fatal crash

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) – A northeastern Pennsylvania woman has been sentenced to at least five years in prison in a crash that killed a good Samaritan who was trying to help two teenagers fix a flat tire.

Thirty-three-year-old Mary Timko of Simpson was sentenced Wednesday in Lackawanna County in the October 2013 crash on Casey Highway in Mayfield.

Timko pleaded guilty in March to homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, DUI and aggravated assault by vehicle.

Authorities said she sent a text message a minute before the crash and had another one queued up to send.

Officials said 30-year-old Richard Cummings was killed instantly and the teens were critically injured.

Defense attorney Bernie Brown said his client has “cried in her cell” and would trade places with Cummings if she could.
