BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – The saying goes….that life is a marathon. A Boardman couple is in love with the endurance race…running 42 of them over the past 30 years. And their biggest accomplishment may have come in March…when they finished a race on their 7th continent.
At 67 and 68 years old, Frank and Velma Verhage have been running side by side since they day they got married 22 years ago.
“We are right together, and i mean that gives me great joy, that we start it together and we finish it together. maybe there might be a step or two between us…but we try to finish at the same time,” both agreed.
The two met in the Youngstown Road Runners Club and have run hundreds of races together. But 8 years ago, they decided to try something different, and run a marathon on all 7 continents.
“Each one of them has had such an influence in our lives. i mean, it’s such an experience that you know, you meet people from all over the world,” said Velma.
Having already completed the Boston Marathon, their journey abroad began in Rome, Italy back in 2007. Then it was off to Africa, with runs through Kenya. The Great Wall marathon was their next adventure in Bejing, China. Then in 2012 they scratched South America off the list with a trip to Easter Island. The next stop on their tour was the Australian outback… and then finally, this past March… their 8-year journey came to an end with a run in Antarctica.
“A wonderful experience, i mean like…you look to the heavens above and say, thank god, it’s over,”Frank said.
