Kent, OH (WKBN) – Mathews’ senior Cheyenne Eggens threw a complete game shutout to help the Mustangs defeat Reserve, 9-0 Thursday in a Division IV Regional Semifinal at Kent State.
The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, then added three more runs in the 4th, including a 2-run home run from Eggens. The South Florida commit went on to pitch a complete game shutout with 14 strikeouts, 3 hits, and no walks. Eggens also went 3-3 from the plate with 2 singles, 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored.
Meredith Grimes also went 4-4 for Mathews, with 2 singles, 2 doubles, an RBI, and 2 runs scored, while Jenna Siefert went 2-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Lenna Hoff also hit 2 for 4 with a single, double, and run scored.
Aleah Hughes struggled from the hill, giving up 10 hits, with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. The Blue Devils also had 3 errors on the day. Western Reserve’s season comes to an end with a 14-8 overall record.
Mathews improves to 24-5 on the season and advance to play Cuyahoga Heights Saturday in the Regional Semifinals at Kent State at noon.
