Man hit by gunfire during flag football game at park

ERIE, Pa. (AP) – Authorities in northwestern Pennsylvania say a man was shot in the calf during a flag football game at a park.

Police in Erie told the Erie Times-News that the victim was hit by gunfire at Rodger Young Park shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday.

Sgt. Mike Brady said the wound wasn’t believed to be life-threatening. He was taken to UPMC Hamot by private vehicle.

Brady said about 50 people were present when the shots were fired and “everybody scattered.”

Witnesses reported seven to 14 shots, and 23-year-old Hunter Moore of Waterford said he then heard “bullets whizzing by our heads.”

He said the shooting victim wasn’t playing and appeared to be in his 20s or 30s.

Police recovered numerous shell casings from a house about a block away.
