Bernard Merchant, 42, appeared in Boardman court Tuesday morning, facing a half-dozen counts, including weapons charges and fleeing from police.

According to a police report, officers spotted Merchant driving at a high rate of speed and chased his car up Southern Boulevard until he crashed into a couple of utility poles on Youngstown’s south side.

Upon bringing Merchant and two others out of the car at gunpoint, police noticed that one of the passengers had suffered what she called a gunshot wound to the stomach, the report states. Paramedics took her to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Youngstown.
