Mine subsidence closes road in North Beaver Township

Road closed

NORTH BEAVER TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WKBN) – A portion of Route 108 in North Beaver Township has been closed because of mine subsidence.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, a section of the highway is closed near Hope Road. It will remain closed until further notice.

An official detour is being posted. From the west, traffic will be rerouted onto Stateline Road and then right onto Columbiana Road. From there, it will return to Route 108.

From the east, the detour is the same in the opposite direction.

PennDOT also notes that Columbiana Road has a 10-ton weight restriction.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, mine subsidence occurs when underground coal mining creates voids that can collapse causing the earth’s surface to subside.
