COLUMBUS, OH (WKBN)-Poland had the tying run at the plate in the 7th but were unable to tie the game as Defiance won the Division II State Championship 5-3 Saturday evening.
Defiance jumped on Poland early, scoring three runs in the first inning that was started by Tyler Weaver singling to left which brought home the first run of the game. Gage Cordray followed with a single plating a run, then Jimmy Bauer doubled to push the lead to 3-0.
Poland answered quickly thanks to a Nick Romeo double that scored Jared Burkert. A few batters later Romeo scored thanks to an error by the Defiance defense to make it 3-2
But Defiance pitcher Michael Hendricks kept the damage to a minimum throughout, going 6.1 innings, allowed 6 hits, 2 earned runs and struckout 7. His offense scored one more run in the 2nd and 4th innings to make the deficit too much for Poland.
The Bulldogs finish the season 28-3.
