EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (WKBN) – A man was killed in an apartment fire Sunday morning.
Neighbors on Clark Street in East Palestine woke up at 7:45 this morning to see an apartment building on fire.
East Palestine Fire Chief Joshua Brown said Monday that his department has not determined a cause for the fire as of Monday afternoon. He says his department and the state fire marshal are still investigating the fire.
Brown hopes to have a damage estimate Tuesday.
The last fire fatality in East Palestine was back in 2000, according to Brown.
“Smoke and flames coming out of the roof like it was going to cave in. Like the whole thing was going to come down,” said Lester Young a neighbor.
East Palestine firefighters arrived within three minutes. Neighbors told firefighters people were still inside.
“Upon investigation, we did find two residents. They were moved to safety quickly,” said East Palestine Fire Chief Joshua Brown.
Firefighters could not get through to a man trapped in one of the other apartments.
“There was heavy fire blown out of the front bottom apartment and we were unable to gain access to that apartment due to the volume of fire,” Brown said.
59-year-old Mark Chamberlain died in the fire.
Officials are still investigating where the fire started, and what caused it.
