BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Eastern Gateway Community College took time out Tuesday to honor its outgoing president.

Laura Meeks has worked in education for 45 years, with 15 of those at Eastern Gateway. She is retiring next month.

The school held a luncheon in her honor on Tuesday at The Embassy in Boardman. Meeks started out teaching at the high school level and worked her way up.

She talked about her favorite memories.

“I always talk about the letters that we get from students. A lot of one-on-one conversations, but many letters where they tell us things like ‘my teacher is so wonderful and I am learning so much,’ ‘now I have a second chance at life, and I owe it all to Eastern Gateway Community College’,” Meeks said.

Dr. Jimmie Bruce will be taking over as president of Eastern Gateway in the middle of July. He most recently served as vice president of academic success at Northwest Vista College.
