2015 Playoffs: Mooney-Ursuline?

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Mooney and Ursuline have met sixty-one times (Cardinals lead, 39-19-3) but only twice in the post-season. That could change this fall as both have been designated to compete in the same division (V, region 15) by the OHSAA.

Their two playoff encounters happened in the 1990s. Their first meeting was a Division III Regional Semifinal matchup in 1990 where the Cardinals knocked off the Irish, 13-7, in Campbell. The next was in 1995 at Fitch Falcon Stadium in the Division IV Regional Semifinal. Mooney won that meeting, 9-7. The two rivals almost met in the 2004 Division IV Regional Championship. Mooney advanced to the final after defeating Chagrin Falls, 42-13. However, Liberty was able to get by Ursuline – 6-0 – in the semifinal denying the two fan bases a chance to see their teams meet.

The two schools have combined for 46 playoff appearances, 99 wins in the post season, 12 state championships and 25 regional titles.

The Cardinals have won their last two regular season contests against Ursuline by a combined scored of 60-21. The Fighting Irish took the previous three meetings with Mooney by scoring an average of 38 points per game.
