Shots fired at Cleveland police in foot chase of suspect

CLEVELAND (AP) – Cleveland police say shots were fired at officers in a foot chase of a suspect near the site of a boy’s fatal encounter with police last year.

Police Chief Calvin Williams says police responded Sunday to a report of six men waving guns when a man fled as police tried to question him. The chief says the man pointed a gun at officers and an officer fired four shots but did not hit the man. Williams says unidentified people began firing at officers as they continued to chase the man.

The man apparently received a puncture wound as he jumped a fence before he was apprehended.

The chase occurred not far from where Tamir Rice was fatally shot in November.

Dozens of people gathered nearby Sunday and yelled at officers.
