SHARPSVILLE, Pa. (WKBN) – Police in Sharpsville said they are still investigating an overnight shooting Monday, but at this point they said it appears to be a case of self-defense.
It happened around midnight at a home on Mayfield Road, just a few blocks away from Buhl Park. Police said Nick Ference, 36, showed up at the home of his estranged wife and forced his way inside.
Investigators said Ference threatened to kill the woman’s boyfriend and started chasing him into the basement. The boyfriend had a gun and shot Ference in the chest. He then called 911 and surrendered to police, according to Sharpsville Police Chief Keith Falasco.
Police said no one else in the home, including three children, was hurt. They also said the boyfriend’s gun was legally registered.
Police said Ference’s estranged wife took out a civil protection-from-abuse order against her husband in January, but rescinded it a week later.
Editor’s note: An initial version of this story incorrectly stated that the man who police described as the intruder shot the man already inside the house.
